Photos from the Ukrainian-Romanian Border Crossing

A photo essay from journalist Jen Stout shows the people fleeing the war in Ukraine and crossing the Danube to enter Romania, where they are greeted by offers of food, shelter and support.

On the Black Sea coast, the strip of Ukraine that runs underneath Moldova provides an escape route for those fleeing Odessa and neighbouring towns. The cosmopolitan port city has not yet experienced the brutal aerial bombardment meted out to other parts of Ukraine, but is feared to be next in line.

Seeing the Russian warships on the horizon, many Odessans have already left, travelling along the coast to the Danube, and crossing to Isaccea in Romania on the Noviodunum ferry.

It’s a cold, uncomfortable journey on the open deck for those travelling on foot.

On the Romanian side though, a huge number of volunteers and fire crew wait to help people with the bags, their dogs, and their children. There’s hot tea, food, doctors and only a short wait to pass through border control.

For now, while Odessa remains relatively safe, the numbers at Isaccea port are manageable. Soon the picture could be very different.
